Multitasking And Stress At The Office - Vector Illustration

Do you ever feel like this at work?

Our Outer Circle is made up of the relationships in our professional lives, social circles and acquaintances. In the Modern Western World we work more hours than any previous generation and 40% of workers bring work home. This creates a situation where the lines between our personal and professional lives are often blurry. Some folks will argue that professional boundaries belong in the Inner Circle because so many people place a high value on their professional lives. On the other hand, many friends are made at work, so the argument could also be made that to be elevated to the Inner Circle, your relationship needs to take an extra step towards being more personal and intimate outside of work.

Being able to recognize boundary issues when they present, is a prerequisite to addressing them. Up until about 20 years ago, in our culture, it was common for women to be expected to compromise their inner circle boundaries (family/significant other/close friends), and for men to compromise their outer circle boundaries (work/business/social). And for each group, it hit on primary drivers. With women, it was safety/affirmation via relationship with home, family, and friends, and with men it was safety/affirmation via power with work, business, and social connections.

From Kat – Inner Circle Boundary Dances

Our Inner Circle Boundaries (ICB’s) explain the primary relationships we have in our lives. The people in our “inner circle” are those closest to us:  Our family of origin, close friends and significant others. Personal Boundaries are complex and consist of both Internal Boundaries (those we have with ourselves), and our Inner Circle Boundaries (our closest relationships).

Does it surprise you to hear that  the relationship we have with ourselves becomes the foundation for healthy boundaries with others? In order to have a good relationship with ourselves, we have to be able to see our challenges, emotions, needs, wants and desires with some sort of clarity. If we have no self-clarity, or things are hazy, we can’t effectively communicate them to those around us. Since we are imperfect humans, this is not unusual and can cause confusion, hurt feelings and stress..  Being clear about who we are, and being able to effectively communicate those wants, desires and needs, is key to  having strong Inner Circle Boundaries.

From Elizabeth: Inner Circle Boundary Dance

Boy, this is one I’ve learned the hard way! It still requires my focus and intention to stay healthy here…  and there are times I need all the support I can get.

I’ve heard it said that there are three primary motivators for people: power, safety, and affirmation. And for each of us, one of these is hardwired into who we are, as the driver.

I can’t say this is an absolute, but there is a lot of truth in that, and if I were to use that model, I would place myself firmly in the ‘affirmation’ camp.

My core wound and fear, is abandonment. My drive is harmony and relationship.

And I’m not alone by a long shot.

That’s a perfect set up for lousy boundaries with those close in our lives.

From Kat: Boundary Landscapes – more context & questions

boundaries cloud and grass

Elizabeth and I decided to dive into the topic of Boundary Landscapes because we both work with many clients on some component of this concept.  Boundaries are the most common area where people can get tripped up in their lives. One of the things that I know for sure is that the places where we stumble, or are repeatedly challenged, are opportunities for us to grow and learn. The Boundary Landscapes are fertile ground for experiential learning.

From Elizabeth: Boundary Landscapes

Boundaries mean different things to different people. It can get confusing to know what we mean when we talk about them.

It helps me to categorize the different types of boundaries. I’ve found that I can have good boundaries in one area, but not in another. Recognizing this… and the drivers for each area, help me to see more clearly, what’s happening.

For me, I see 2 main areas that make up the Boundary Landscape:

The first has to do with our dance directly with people:

  • Internal Boundaries (boundaries with ourselves)
  • Personal Relationship Boundaries (friends/family/significant others)
  • Professional Boundaries (working/business)

The second has to do with our dance in the world:

  • how we handle time (ours and others)
  • how we handle space (personal space, relationship space, physical space)
  • how we handle stuff (ours and others)

As you can see… this covers quite a bit of ground, and we can focus in on one area, without recognizing that other areas are causing us pain in our lives.
